From Rome to Sicily

May 27th, 2013 by cdm4

Today I bought a cellphone and took a 7 hour train to Taormina. First, an amazing breakfast on the roof of the hotel.  Breakfast means cheese, cold cuts, bread, fruit, yogurt, nutella, nuts, orange juice, coffee, more coffee.  The train was a series of compartments, each with 6 people. Pretty scenery outside of Rome, but then a lot of what you would expect to be right next to the train tracks.  At stops, men with little carts board the train to sell drinks and sandwiches.  I overheard a long, very confusing conversation about Italian politics.  Two people in our car in an argument over whether or not trains are always late south of Naples.  We passed an excessive number of half competed abandoned construction projects along the southern toe of Italy.  You could tell from the train that some of these little seaside towns had been hit hard by the recession.

Was able to do a sketch of some buildings in Rome during the ride:

Will color in more later

The exciting part of the ride is the ferry to get from the mainland to Sicily.  They load the whole train onto the ferry.  This doesn’t seem like a very efficient process.  The boat ride itself takes  20 minutes, but the whole process took an hour and a half. Then Sicily!  We arrived late at a train station at the base of the mountain at Taormina.  A taxi drove us VERY FAST up a windy cliff road.  Then we walk up into town for a great dinner.  I had pasta, which was a mixture of breadcrumbs, tomatoes, and sardines.  Then the fish of the day, which was fantastic.  Then bed.

This place is very very pretty

At Capri

May 23rd, 2013 by cdm4

(This post is in the wrong order) It is very difficult to maintain a travelogue without wifi. But I’m on a very stormy Capri. I think I’l l do some retroactive posts with pictures once I get somewhere more connected.

Today, I took a walk all the way up one side of the island to see the Villa Jovis, where Emperor Tiberius used to vacafion. To get there is about a 20 minute walk straight up a hill, with fancy, but reasonable houses on either side of a very tiny alley. One sight was a fancy Italian lady in heels standing on a liffle forklift type cart, whih are the only vehicles that can go up to the mountain villas. At the top is an overlook, then the villa entrance. There were 5 goats hanging around (this is Capri (meaning Goats).

To the South

Today I took the train 8 hours all the way down to Sicily. Got off in Taormina, which is surprizingly full of British people. Ate a a restaurant close to the hotel which would have had a sea view if if wasn’t dark. Eating dinner at 9.:30 is taking a little getting used to. Also, I got a tiny Italian phone without spellcheck so excuse any typos. There will be lots. More on the train ride later.

Arrival in Rome

May 18th, 2013 by cdm4

Well, that was a rough departure.  But once we got a new functional airplane, everything was fine.

First day in Rome was lots of business and walking-getting the train tickets validated and trying to set up my cell phone (it’s not working).  For tourist things, first was a trip to St. Paul’s outside the walls.  Then a quick walk around the Colliseum, Pantheon,  various Piazzas and centers of governmentm.

One major thing on the agenda was a stop at Giolliti Gelato.  Which actually seriously has the best gelato ever.  Getting your gelato is a process – first you wait in one line for a ticket, then you join a large crowd trying to get noticed by the ice cream scooper.  I got Pistacchio ( which is apparently pronounced pis-taKKeo, with a hard K) and Fior di Panna (which is basically cream flavored).  All this of course with panna montata (whipped cream) on top.

Then dinner at 9pm.  We sat between a group of Germans and a group of Italians.  At 6pm, alll the restaurants were full of Americans, but at 9 were full of Europeans.  We ate at a restaurant on a quiet square, called Le Cave di St. Ignazio, Santorini.  So good. First, a comp plate of suppli (lightly fried rice balls filled with mozzarella) and bruscetta.  We ordered the antipasti plate, with amazing vegetables, mushrooms, meatballs, and the best fresh mozzarella I’ve ever had.  A bottle of wine and sparkling water also.  For the main course I had a plain pizza margherita.  Ahh.  Then a walk to the trevi fountain at night and then getting a little lost  and finally finding the hotel.  Now 30 hours since I got to Newark airport with maybe and hour of sleep so it’s time fir bed.

Departure -Andiamo

At the terminal gate about to board a plane to Rome.  Here we go!

Update: Then we flew about 30 minutes and then turned around and landed back at Newark airport .

They’ll be checking the plane for at least an hour to fix the backup fuel cap or something.  Also, there were firetrucks waiting because we land with a full tank of fuel.   Apparently landing “heavy” is bad for a plane so now the engineers have to check that all out too.

Then we reboarded the plane, then half and hour later , they announced that the head engineer in San Francisco had overruled the ground crew to ground the plane for the night.  Then we all stole a plane parked.next door that was supposed to go to Buenos Aires.  This has all been very confusing.  But we get a free drink voucher!
